Today's topic for the Pagan Blog Project is about eggs in magic.
Eggs are used in cleansing and healing magic. I am going to be honest. I have never used eggs this way, but I have been interested in trying it as for some reason, this topic has been coming up a lot. Suddenly I'm reading lots of things about eggs in magic, and now the Pagan Blog Topic is focusing on the letter E. Coincidence? Never.
Eggs are thought to absorb the negativity one may have, resulting in the form of illness, depression, worry, etc. It is also believed to remove a jinx or curse.
Some believe that a certain type of egg is better than others, such as those who believe the best eggs to use to banish negativity/evil are those of a black hen. My opinion is the same I have about all magical things. Do your best to find the right "ingredients" but if you can't, make do. (although if I happened upon black hen laid eggs I would do a happy magic dance.) I think it's probably wise to choose organic and free range eggs if you can.
The eggs are used like any magical object, and are often "dressed" or anointed as you do candles. The oil you choose should be something that corresponds with the Work, such as healing, protection, uncrossing, banishing, etc. The egg is then held and either prayed over, filled with magical intent, meditated on, charged with an affirmation or a incantation - whatever you typically do before spellwork. Then the egg is lightly rubbed over the body, from head to toe moving clockwise. In work to clear the mind, you can concentrate on the head area and move around in a clockwise motion.
When finished, the egg is cracked into a bowl, and then usually either disposed of outside, or flushed down the toilet. Some people will "read" the egg once it is cracked as some do with melted candle wax.
Now, I have no idea how I have gone this long without an "egg cleaning," but I am going to give this a try soon, and I will post back here with the results, along with the story...... stay tuned!

Interesting. I have never used eggs either. maybe worth trying. Black hens.. My mom keeps hens and rooster and the black hens' eggs usually have green shells. Pretty cool ;)
Eggs? Never knew about this!! Very interesting; looking forward to your eggs-position of this practice!!
Intersting! I vaguely remember reading something many years ago about using eggs in Magick. I do believe it was a book about Folk Magick and the author wrote about 'reading' the egg after it was cracked into the bowl. Hhhhmmm... need to see if I can find that book.....
Elena - well, you have access to the preferred eggs - so you MUST try it! :)
Robin...*groan* :) but I will deliver as promised!!
Jeanne - I won't be good at the egg reading - I am not good at that kind of thing (tea leaf reading, scrying, etc.) So I guess my egg remains will just be flushed away...
Aine, very interesting! I never new about this. Thank you for sharing. I am looking forward to reading about your egg cleaning.
I once used an egg for a blue moon ritual where we used pens and wrote our wished on a blue dyed egg. Can't remember if the wish came true or not. And then of course on Ostara I use egg magick and write runes on them. I forgot all about egg magick until I read your post. As for the black hen thing, like you said, just make it work, regardless
I love this! Very, very interesting! I absolutely love eggs (they are just so darn cute!) so I think I will love to try this out. I could definitely use a good cleansing!
